“The principles underlying propaganda are extremely simple. A society, most of whose members spend a great part of their time, not on the spot, not here and now and in their calculable future, but somewhere else, in the irrelevant other worlds of sport and soap opera, of mythology and metaphysical fantasy, will find it hard to resist the encroachments of those would manipulate and control it.” Only the vigilant can maintain their liberties, and only those who are constantly and intelligently on the spot can hope to govern themselves effectively by democratic procedures. The other world of religion is different from the other world of entertainment but they resemble one another in being most decidedly "not of this world." Both are distractions and, if lived in too continuously, both can become, in Marx's phrase "the opium of the people" and so a threat to freedom. In "Brave New World" non-stop distractions of the most fascinating nature are deliberately used as instruments of policy, for the purpose of preventing people from paying too much attention to the realities of the social and political situation. But even in Rome there was nothing like the non-stop distractions now provided by newspapers and magazines, by radio, television and the cinema. For conditions even remotely comparable to those now prevailing we must return to imperial Rome, where the populace was kept in good humor by frequent, gratuitous doses of many kinds of entertainment - from poetical dramas to gladiatorial fights, from recitations of Virgil to all-out boxing, from concerts to military reviews and public executions. Christmas came but once a year, feasts were "solemn and rare," there were few readers and very little to read, and the nearest approach to a neighborhood movie theater was the parish church, where the performances though frequent, were somewhat monotonous. They might long for distractions, but the distractions were not provided. In the past most people never got a chance of fully satisfying this appetite. In a word, they failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions. They did not foresee what in fact has happened, above all in our Western capitalist democracies - the development of a vast mass communications industry, concerned in the main neither with the true nor the false, but with the unreal, the more or less totally irrelevant. “In regard to propaganda the early advocates of universal literacy and a free press envisaged only two possibilities: the propaganda might be true, or the propaganda might be false.

While that is quite the compliment, it is also to the album’s detriment in a way. Match this with an instrumental palette that calls back to the heydays of soul and you’ve got a formula that produces a batch of tracks that wouldn’t feel out of place in a playlist full of the old greats. Tracks like the aforementioned title track, “Good to be Back Home”, and “Ain’t Gonna Give It Up” have Bradley absolutely singing his heart out, his soulful screams setting each track on fire with his passion. This may have to do with the clearer production, but the point still stands that the man is a vocal titan. He’s proven on his two previous records that he’s got quite a set of pipes, but he’s never sounded better than on this album right here. The greatest strength of Changes isn’t its conceptual cohesion, but rather Charles Bradley himself. What both of these tracks have in common is this loveable sense of authenticity to his words that give his words that much more power. The former is a tearjerker of a Black Sabbath cover that is a great showcase of Bradley’s vocals at their most powerful and emotionally potent, as well as being one of the best songs on the record. The latter is a call for change in the outlook of the people of the world replace all the hatred in your soul with peace and love. Nowhere is this attitude more apparent than in the first two singles that came out for this record: “Changes” and “Change for the World”. While the album doesn’t stick to this theme of change as much as the opening monologue would suggest, there’s still hints of it in a couple of tracks. The strained, dusty sound in his voice makes his claims of struggle quite convincing, as it definitely sounds like he’s been around the block more than a few times. The opening track starts with a monologue from Bradley as he ponders on how America has had a part in his life’s struggles, successes, and nearly everything in between before belting out a short yet powerful cover of “God Bless America”. Here on Changes, Charles Bradley uses these assets to his best ability. The maturity and aged wisdom that come with being accustomed to the harsh realities of life can bring an interesting point of view to the table. However, much more experienced artists, whether it be in the music industry or just living in general, have their own advantages. Whether it in the mainstream or within more underground scenes, fresher faces are more sought after for their youthful spirit and exuberance. In the music environment we reside in today, younger acts are often the center of attention. also known as: adductor compartment of the thigh Medial compartment of the thigh contains: pectineus m., adductor longus m., adductor brevis m., adductor magnus m., gracilis m., obturator externus m. also known as: evertor compartment of the legĪ connective tissue compartment that contains the muscles that adduct the thigh its boundaries are: anterior - medial intermuscular septum posterior - fascia between the medial and posterior compartments medial - fascial lata lateral - femur Lateral compartment of the leg contains: fibularis longus m., fibularis brevis m. obturator internus tendon also known as: gluteal compartment of the thighĪ connective tissue compartment that contains the muscles that evert the ankle joint its boundaries are: anterior, lateral and medial - crural fascia posterior - anterior and posterior intermuscular septa, fibula Lateral compartment of the thigh contains: tensor fasciae latae m., gluteus maximus m., gluteus medius m., gluteus minimis m., piriformis m., superior and inferior gemellus mm., quadratus femoris m. also known as: adductor canal, subsartorial canalĪ connective tissue compartment that contains the muscles of the gluteal region it is located posterolateral to the hip joint it begins proximally at the inferior angle of the femoral triangle and ends distally at the adductor hiatus textbooks may disagree on the medial boundary of this triangleĪ musculo-fascial canal that contains the large neurovascular bundle of the anterior thigh its boundaries are: anterior - sartorius m. If so, were they effective in helping you shed pounds? What about side effects? Did you suffer any ill effects from taking them or did you do just fine? Personally, I’d be wary of taking anything that has a potential damaging effect on the heart but I could also see someone saying “yeah, but being overweight puts strain on the heart too.” I suspect there are some strong feelings on either side when it comes to stackers-I look forward to reading what you have to say! And others make their own, purchasing each ingredient separately and then combining them when they take each dose. Some people buy them already stacked, so to speak. In order to avoid sleep problems, many people take their stackers before mid to late afternoon. Most people who use stackers taken them two to three times a day in a ratio of one part ephedrine to 10 parts caffeine and 10 parts aspirin. But it can also cause heart attacks and other problems in young people who had no previous health conditions. Ephedrine has been shown to be especially dangerous for people who have pre-existing heart problems and heart disease. Just as a side note, some ads for stackers claim that they will help with your athletic endurance too, but this has not been proven in medical studies.Īgain, this weight loss can definitely come at a price. A meta-analysis, which is when researchers look at a bunch of similar studies all at once, concluded that using ephedrine in some combination leads to an average weight loss of about one kilogram more a month than just a placebo. Also, plain supplements with just ephedrine and no caffeine have shown the same result. Placebo-based studies have found that ephedrine taken in combination with caffeine can lead to fat loss. The main ingredient in stackers, ephedrine, comes with a pretty hefty laundry list of dangers and potential side effects, especially those involving the heart.įirst, let’s look at the research. The good news? Studies indicate that they might actually work to help you lose weight, which is a relative rarity in the world of diet pills. From my research, it seems like stackers are definitely a “good news/bad news” type of product. So no matter what you need, it'll arrive at your door without costing you a dime. His combination of route running, speed, and RAC ability evokes Kelce’s highlight reels in my head. I’m not prone to comping rookie tight ends to future Hall of Famers, but Kincaid reminds me of Travis Kelce on film. He is a tackle-breaking steamroller in the open field. Last year Kincaid was 13th in PFF’s receiving grade and yards per route run against man coverage (minimum 10 man coverage targets). He has early and late separation skills that allow him to be flexed out to the boundary, even against man coverage. Kincaid can win in line, in the slot and on the perimeter. He is exceptional at high-pointing the ball, which will serve him well in the red zone in the NFL. Kincaid has excellent body control with above-the-rim skills. He looks fluid through his routes with a quick snap at the top of his stem. When he’s in a rhythm, he is a special player.ĭalton Kincaid has special movement skills. He’s an explosive rusher with some nice lateral agility for his size. Richardson is a sick athlete capable of highlight-reel-worthy play every snap. He’s still in the see-it, throw-it phase of his evolution. Richardson isn’t an anticipatory thrower. He has only one gear on many of these plays: a full-bore fastball. He needs to gain touch on short and intermediate throws. You get a glimpse of the type of game-changing quarterback Richardson can be if it all coalesces. He’ll toss a ball behind a receiver running a slant and then hit a receiver in stride for a 50-yard bomb into double coverage. Richardson has a cannon for an arm, but he’s still refining it. His ball placement is strong in these play designs. Richardson looks comfortable throwing on the run, moving to his right. This was also a favorite escape path when pressured, as he would roll out right in many cases instead of stepping up in the pocket. Richardson was utilized on a ton of bootlegs to the right. Sometimes, he hesitates with open wide receivers pumping the ball instead of firing as if he doesn’t trust his eyes. Richardson rarely gets to his second option when he does, it feels a tick behind. Many passing plays have a predetermined target immediately. Anthony Richardson looks like a quarterback with only one full season of starting experience under his belt. Despite those racy wheels and new front air dam, let's face it: it still looks like a Cobalt, which means bland with a capital "B." But maybe that's part of its allure: "It's a sleeper car," said Hong, "and no one will expect it to be so fast.Built on General Motors’ Delta architecture and launched for 2005, the front-wheel-drive subcompact Cobalt comes in sedan and coupe body styles. Obviously, engineering time was spent elsewhere. The plastics, the fabric covering the seats (although the lateral support is quite good) and the lack of proper cubbies are annoying. "It doesn't have the quality feel of the others," said Hong. What's not cool about the Cobalt SS? The interior. What else is cool about the Cobalt SS? For its $23,510 as-tested price, it comes with forged-alloy wheels, 4-piston Brembo front brakes, a boost gauge and the ability to perform no-lift shifts via an algorithm in the engine controller. Just think what it could have done with the $495 limited-slip diff! But because of its nimble handling, its best time was just 0.16 sec. This was especially apparent around the autocross, where exiting slow corners was an exercise in right-foot willpower. So in tight turns, spinning the inside front wheel was as easy as, well, pressing hard on the throttle pedal. One of the few sore points dynamically for the Cobalt SS is its ability at times to put this wondrous power to its front wheels, because for reasons we can't comprehend, GM gave us a Cobalt without the optional limited-slip front differential. It's mated to the most precise gearbox of the group, a 5-speed, "marred only by its cheap-feeling plastic knob," said Kott. Torque peaks at just 2000 rpm - yet it makes usable power all the way to its 6300-rpm redline. Not only is this sweet engine virtually lag-free, it's also vice-free, as it's smooth and quiet, and has "right now" power at all times. It feels light, turns in like crazy, has lots of grip and only moderate body roll." He admitted the Cobalt SS occasionally displayed an "odd, disjointed feel while cornering - probably attributable to the torsion-beam rear axle - but it's sure hard to upset this car."Īnother strong point for the Cobalt SS is its 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected 4-cylinder, which makes 260 bhp and 260 lb.-ft. "It's the rental car that went to hot-rod school. Its slightly heavy steering has near-perfect weighting, and the car goes exactly where you tell it. And it didn't just win, it dominated the others.īut what surprised us even more than the raw data was how composed and quick the Cobalt SS was on back roads. In the last, the Cobalt SS posted test-best numbers in the skidpad and slalom - a superb 0.92g and 70.0 mph, respectively. They did one heckuva job, as how else can you explain a car with a torsion-beam rear axle handling as well as this one does?Īnd handle it did - everything we could throw at it, from the racetrack-worthy back roads of California's Central Valley, to a challenging autocross course, to our traditional performance testing. It's no secret GM engineers spent a lot of time tearing around racetracks in the Cobalt SS, fine-tuning the car's FE5 suspension. We're about to set it free of that title. The Cobalt SS may be the most underrated car in the world. |
